Summary
Sensor devices are directly related to safety, being responsible for detecting the presence of toxic substances, such as ammonia, which despite being a naturally generated compound in the metabolic process can be highly harmful to health in higher concentrations [1], [2]. In this work, fullerene base materials were studied, being known as a material with a high affinity to collect electrons and considered to be the third carbon allotrope, after diamond and graphite. This work aims to characterize PCBM, OPCBMMB and PPCBMB as ammonia sensors, using two different film deposition techniques, Langmuir-Schaefer (LS) and drop casting. The LS films growth was observed by UV-vis spectra, where different measurements were taken during the deposition process, resulting in a linear increasing of its absorbance for each deposited layer. The morphology of the films was studied by Atomic Force Microscopy (AFM), that showed considerable changes in surface, depending on the technique used in the deposition. Drop casting films resulted in a structure with the formation of larger aggregates, with a rougher surface than the LS films. The performance of these films as ammonia sensors was performed through electrical characterization, with measurements of current vs time. Initially, the films were immersed in a constant nitrogen stream, which defines the measurement baseline. The experiment was carried in 10 minutes cycles, alternating between the baseline and a saturated ammonia atmosphere. These cycles were repeated in order to verify the response reproducibility. Results showed that all materials displayed an electric response to the analyte stimulus, with different response time for each technique. In general, LS films shower a lower time response than drop casting films, due to its more organized structure, that facilitates charge transport, thus enhancing the time needed for the film to react [3]. Also, the increase in the electrical conductivity during the interaction of fullerene and ammonia is due to its donor-acceptor relation. Fullerene based materials are known for being good acceptor, while NH3 is a good electron donor [4], [5]. [1] S. V.
