Summary
Organic conjugated polymers have drawn attention of researchers specially for their interesting electronic properties, presenting high electronic mobility and possible intense light absorption and emission in the visible and ultraviolet regions, enabling them to various technological applications, such as light emitting diodes and photovoltaic cells. The pursuit for optimal properties on these materials takes advantage in their high dependency on the environment and treatments to which the polymer can be submitted. Under specifics circumstances, such systems form quasi-crystalline structures known as aggregates, which have different electronic properties from the isolated polymer chains. The aggregation process can occur by some means, such as by adding solvents in which the polymer has low solubility (poor solvent) to a solution where the polymer is well dissolved (good solvent); by lowering the temperature; by aging the solution; and by exposing the well dissolved solution to pulsed radiation. In the present work, we demonstrated that the processes of aggregation of poly(3-hexylthiophene) (P3HT) induced by pulsed radiation can be enhanced by adding small concentrations of poor solvents We have employed UV-Vis absorption spectroscopy to track the formation of P3HT aggregates by exposing a well dissolved solution of P3HT in chloroform at 0.1 mg/mL to a nanosecond pulsed laser centered at 532 nm, within its absorption band. The resulting absorption spectrum shows the formation of bands compatible to aggregates at 564 nm and 605 nm, which become more intense for longer exposure times, until a saturation value at 180 s. After adding low concentrations of methanol to the initial solution, 1% to 5%, the absorption spectrum, although initially unchanged, shows more intense absorption bands related to aggregates after the exposition to pulsed radiation, the band at 605 nm going from initial intensity of 0.1 in the spectrum of the solution containing 0% of methanol up to 0.5 in the solution with 5% of methanol. The ratio between the band from aggregates at 605 nm and the band from isolated polymer chains at 450 nm goes from 0.08 to 0.51. We have also characterized by Raman spectroscopy the solution containing 5% of methanol at different exposure times, and the shape of the Raman spectrum reveals some Raman peaks in the region from 1000 cm-1 to 1600 cm-1, which have their intensity increased for longer exposure times. These Raman peaks are compatible with the vibrations of P3HT in crystal form, although are not observed in isolated chains solution due to the low concentration of P3HT chains in chloroform. The appearance of these peaks indicates a resonance effect, in which aggregated polymer chains vibrations resonate with the excitation laser light centered at 633 nm, compatible with an aggregate absorption band, enhancing the Raman peaks related to it. These findings contribute in the understanding of the aggregation process and add a new variable to optimize the electronic properties of this material.
