Summary
The spectrophotometer is one of the most useful devices for quantitative spectral analysis in various fields by measuring the intensity of light emitted (luminescence) or transmitted (absorbance) by a sample. In some applications, precise and reliable data acquisition is required which often leads to the implementation of complex and expensive spectrophotometric systems [1]. There are also applications in which portability and fast data acquisition are mandatory as in the case of real-time and in situ monitoring systems [2]. Several portable and low-cost projects have been developed for educational purposes using smartphones [3,4], and webcams [5], or to obtain simple and limited information and not for acquiring scientifically significant data, which requires reproducible and accurate measurements. Here we developed a low-cost and portable spectrometer, using a linear CCD sensor array (TCD1304DG) controlled by an STM32 Nucleo-64 development board, providing high-speed data acquisition of 1 ms and spectral resolution of 1 nm in the 400 nm - 1000 nm range. Absorbance and photoluminescence spectra were obtained to demonstrate the equipment’s capability and the results were compared with a commercial portable spectrometer. This spectrometer can be easily assembled for research and lecture purposes in which all assembling parts are commercially available or can be printed by a standard 3D printer. Free software and an instruction manual are also available for users.
