Resumo
China’s agricultural development over the past four decades has been one of the most significant transformations in the global food system. Since the economic reforms initiated in the late 1970s, the country has led remarkable increases in productivity, rural incomes, and food production. Combined with investments in irrigation, infrastructure, research, and extension services, these reforms enabled China to achieve substantial gains in grain production and food security. Since the 2000s, agricultural modernization has accelerated through the promotion of mechanization, digital technologies, biotechnology, and the consolidation of larger farming operations. E-commerce platforms, smart agriculture, and precision farming have expanded rapidly, connecting rural producers to urban markets and creating new opportunities for rural entrepreneurship. At the same time, China’s agricultural transformation has generated important social and environmental challenges. In response, the Chinese government has launched major initiatives such as the Rural Revitalization Strategy, emphasizing rural development, environmental sustainability, technological innovation, and improved living standards in rural areas. More recently, policies have focused on strengthening food security, reducing dependence on imported commodities, promoting domestic seed innovation, and building more resilient agri-food systems in the face of geopolitical uncertainties and climate change. This session explores some of the most important transformations currently shaping rural China, with particular attention to the social, economic, and political dimensions of the country's Rural Revitalization Strategy. The presentations will address: Topics: The Involution of Resource Distribution in China’s Rural Revitalization Campaign; The Undercurrent Logic of Chinese Rural Economic Modernization; The Tension in Farmer Organization in Rural Revitalization and Its Reflection: A Field Study Based on Ten Villages in Yunnan Province, China; Technology and women: The dynamic process of gender relation change in the development of e-commerce in agriculture of China
