Resumo
The session Publications and Editorial Practices in Rural Sociology: Challenges, Innovations, and Dialogues Among Journal Editors aims to foster critical reflection on the contemporary transformations affecting academic publishing in rural sociology and related fields. Bringing together editors from leading international journals, the session will explore the main institutional, epistemological, and political challenges currently shaping scientific communication in the social sciences. Particular attention will be given to the changing landscape of academic publishing in contexts marked by digitalization, artificial intelligence, open science agendas, and increasing pressures for internationalization and bibliometric performance. The discussion may address issues such as peer-review practices, editorial ethics, multilingualism, inequalities in global knowledge production, and the growing concentration of academic publishing within large commercial platforms. Editors will also be invited to reflect on strategies for strengthening scientific diversity, supporting early-career researchers, and expanding the visibility of scholarship produced in the Global South. Another central topic concerns the role of academic journals in promoting interdisciplinary dialogue and responding to emerging global challenges, including climate change, food insecurity, agrarian conflicts, and rural transformations. The session will additionally provide an opportunity to discuss innovations in editorial management, experiences with open-access publishing, new formats of scientific dissemination, and the implications of artificial intelligence for writing, reviewing, and evaluating academic work. More broadly, the dialogue seeks to examine how journals can contribute to building more inclusive, democratic, and internationally connected academic communities while preserving intellectual pluralism and critical debate within rural sociology.
