Resumo

This paper offers an analysis of the development of capitalist forestry in Chile from a historical materialist lens, by focusing on the regional process of appropriation of land, labour and technology and the global process of unequal exchange. The paper uses empirical material from extensive and long-term fieldwork in the Ñuble region in Southern Chile. The paper analyses interviews, documents and observations to conceptually analyze the development of capitalist forestry based on tree plantations in an agrarian context characterized by the struggles for water resources, efforts to conserve native forests and local initiatives to maintain agriculture and food production regionally.
