Resumo

This paper presents our joint research on the coca (and to a lesser extent marijuana) commodity frontier in Cauca, Colombia as a 'narcofrontier'. The purpose of the research is to interrogate the role of the FARC-EP and the rural illicit producers union COCCAM in managing the crisis tendencies associated with capitalist agriculture and its pressures for constant expansion. We thereby position ourselves between existing positions in the heterodox debate on coca production, which shape coca expansion either as a form of capitalist 'enclosure' of common land resources, or as a bulwark against the pressures which drive commodity frontier expansion. We critically evaluate the extent to which rebel governance impacts these tendencies and the significance of the commodity frontier framing for understanding illicit economies such as coca.
