Resumo

In recent years, family farmers in Brazil and Spain have developed new forms of collective action structured around agroecology and linked to institutional organizations, social movements, and farmers’ organizations. This paper presents the social dynamics of the functioning of these collective actions, called Socio-ecological Food Networks (SFN), related to the evolution of ecological production and their insertion into alternative markets in Spain and Brazil. The study synthesizes two case studies: one in Brazil (short marketing channels for organic food in São Paulo) and one in Spain (the commercialization of organic products in Segovia). This research was conducted using a set of qualitative research methods. We identified SFN initiatives in these countries and investigated their origins and characteristics, as well as the factors of emergence and impact, using available documentation and analyses of the views of social agents (producers, leaders of the ecological movement, traders, researchers, and technicians). The study reveals the challenges, limitations, and lessons from different agroecological experiences to improve actions within socio-technical networks.
