Resumo

Drawing from my previous research on Brazil-nut harvesting and my current ethnographic research on small- and medium-scale gold mining in two regions of the Bolivian Amazon, I aim to examine the relationship between the social and cultural factors that perpetuate this region's status as a commodity frontier. By "social aspects," I refer to the social structures and labor regimes that these activities promote, which have historically characterized the particularity of the capitalist articulation of these regions. Cultural aspects, on the other hand, have to do with the representations constructed around these activities and their relationship with the archetypal image of the Amazon as a natural territory. They also have to do with the subjectivities, cultural institutions, and practices established in these regions that constitute a specific Amazonian modernity. In this context, I argue that studying the Bolivian Amazon as a frontier should not only analyze the economic contradictions of its capitalist development but also consider its evolving social and cultural density.
