Resumo

In a context of sustained and growing globalization, marked by conflicts and disputes arising from the struggle for control and sovereignty over food, energy, and strategic resources, rural territorial dynamics are being restructured and reconfigured, both in the global North and South. These recent transformations are part of a geopolitics of complementarity between the financialization of agricultural and extractive production, which energizes certain power relations, property rights, and more or less stabilized logics of spatial organization. The classic schemes and categories that assume certain oppositions between center and periphery, inherited from the 20th century, are being questioned in order to enable questions that go beyond the assumption of the position of rural areas in the South as suppliers of raw materials and those of transformation—and manufacturing and industrialization in the North, the “traditional” forms of integration into the chains of transformation, commercialization, and valorization. This dichotomy between a global South as producer and a North as consumer no longer withstands contemporary transformations. Based on the research we have been conducting in different regions of the province of Salta, located in northwestern Argentina, we propose some lines of inquiry that contribute to the debate on the integrated and complementary processes of transformation of modes of agricultural production and labor and raw material extraction in South America.
