Resumo

The rural population of Santiago del Estero province is notable for its agrarian history and significant presence. In recent decades, rural areas in the province have undergone shifts in population distribution and economic activities. This paper analyzes, using a representative survey of 223 households in the northern half of the province, the economic activities, labor market patterns, and living conditions of the population based on household characteristics. The survey randomly selected 47 rural segments according to the number of dwellings identified in the most recent National Population Census and systematically surveyed the households within these segments. Drawing on this information, we characterized the population’s living conditions, including housing quality, household amenities, service availability, health coverage, access to education, and the extent of social protection cash transfers. This analysis also takes into account whether rural areas are dispersed or clustered, household type, demographic profile, and the economic integration of household members, among other factors that shape the living conditions of the rural population. By examining these dimensions, we aim to elucidate the relationship between family strategies, lifestyles, and the broader living conditions of the population.
