Resumo

Revolutions associated with inequitable access to land are mainly associated with the global South. In this paper we examine inequality in land ownership in England. A very small minority own the majority of land. In the north East of England, there is the highest percentage of tenant farmers in the country. Land use is shifting, with a government policy that now favors environmental land use over food production. This in turn means there is no longer a need for farm tenants, with many tenancies not being renewed. There is an increasing likelihood of a redundant livelihood for many tenant farmers. We ask why there is no revolt. We explore power relations in England associated with land ownership to understand the acquiescence of tenant farmers to this blatant inequality.
