Resumo

"Tension" serves as a crucial perspective for understanding the complex role of farmer organization in rural revitalization, yet previous discussions have often suffered from separating internal and external dimensions. Based on a review of the literature on tensions in farmer organization, this paper reveals that such tensions exist not only as a "grouping process" from an internal perspective but also as interactions and interdependencies with the external environment from an external perspective. From an internal viewpoint, organizational tensions manifest as motivational and structural tensions, while from an external perspective, they appear as subject- and goal-related tensions, along with boundary tensions arising from the interplay between internal and external environments. Drawing on field research from ten villages in Yunnan Province, China, this study identifies five distinct sets of tensions in Chinese farmer organization. These tensions are characterized as follows: the motivational tension between individualism and collectivism; the structural tension between formal and informal rules; the institutional environmental tension between state-supplied systems and farmer-demanded systems; the goal-related tension between survival rationality and social rationality; and the boundary tension between localized and mobile identities. Essentially, these tensions result from the interplay of five dichotomies: public versus private notions, normative versus factual effectiveness, state versus societal relations, economic versus social dimensions, and internal versus external identities. To mitigate the negative effects of these tensions, it is necessary to recognize and accommodate them from both organizational and social construction perspectives.
