Resumo

Agriculture is being scaled up in countries around the globe. The results have been especially dramatic in China, where a system of equal farmland distribution is giving way to rapid concentration. This is taking place in conjunction with policies that centralize power in the hands of the local party officials, diminishing the role of village elections. These developments have sidelined most households, detaching them from their land, crowding them into multistory apartments, and diminishing their voice in village affairs. In this paper, we investigate these changes in a village promoted by the government as a model of rural modernization, showing how they have helped convert the village into a type of enterprise controlled by local government, a process we call village corporatization.
