Resumo

The construction of markets for family farming is a fundamental element for ensuring its socioeconomic reproduction in the contemporary context of environmental and social crises. In this regard, the State may intervene in multiple ways to design or adapt existing markets so that this social group can access them on more equitable terms. This study aims to identify the possibilities and limitations of public policies implemented by the Brazilian State in creating or reshaping markets for family farming. To this end, the analysis draws on two theoretical foundations: Bob Jessop’s strategic–relational approach to the State and Neil Fligstein’s conception of markets as arenas of social construction and contestation. This discussion is further complemented by Sergio Schneider’s typology of markets in the Brazilian context, which encompasses institutional, proximity-based, territorial, and conventional markets. Methodologically, the study conducts a systematic literature review on institutional markets in Brazil, examining how different researchers have analyzed the topic, alongside a documentbased analysis of legislation (laws, decrees, and provisional measures) addressing the theme from the country’s re-democratization to the present (1980–2025). The findings indicate which policies the Brazilian federal government has implemented to construct or reshape markets for family farming, as well as the instruments employed in policy design. Beyond offering an introductory analysis, the research seeks to establish a foundation for further studies on institutional markets in Brazil.
