Resumo
Cotton is a unique agrifood crop due to its crucial colonial role in the development of industrial capitalism and its current substantial ecological footprint in both production and processing. Various programs to develop a “better cotton” have emerged recently and now make up about one-fourth of total global cotton production. Compared to organic food crops, organic cotton is also unique in that it requires separate organic certification for the production and processing sectors of the commodity chain. For example, the GOTS (Global Organic Textile Standard) is the major certifier for organic cotton textiles. This paper employs a commodity chain conceptual framework to investigate the global organic cotton system, focusing on empirical research from the Texas Panhandle Region and with special attention to certification issues.
