Resumo

This presentation will compare and contrast the agricultural co-operatives of Cuba and Tanzania after the Cold War. It asks : what has become of these once robust socialist movements of yesteryear? What can they learn from one another in the spirit of Global South inter-cooperation today? What do these two case studies reveal about the outlines of a new agrarian co-operative paradigm in a post-liberal world order? What role could co-operative and other social movements in the West play in supporting such a post-liberal transition both there and beyond? The methods are based on empirical research from the authors’ PhD theses in the discipline of political science, updated with a literature review. The paper covers numerous themes including co-operative-focused education, sustainability-oriented public policies, and cross-sectoral comparisons of the political role of cooperatives.
