Resumo
Zygomycosis is a granulomatous disease that affects humans and animals, especially sheep in tropical regions. It is caused by fungi of the order Mucorales and is distributed worldwide, although its frequency is low. The aim of this study was to report the occurrence of zygomococcosis in a 1-year-old female sheep of no defined breed, highlighting its anatomopathological aspects. The animal had been apathetic and inappetent for 15 days and 3 days before its death, ophthalmic protrusion of the right eye was evident. Another sheep had had similar symptoms about a year ago. The animal had access to a swimming pool where there was no water renewal, only rainwater. The macroscopic evaluation revealed a low body score and above the larynx, extending to the palatoglossal arch, there was a mass with caseous contents of a yellow-green color and soft consistency, with marked hyperemia and tissue infiltration. In the ethmoidal conchae there was a friable yellow-green mass adhered to the nasal cavity, extending to the cribriform lamina of the ethmoid. Histopathological examination revealed a granulomatous inflammatory infiltrate in the lungs, kidneys and nasal cavity, with multifocal necrosis and multiple foci of a strongly eosinophilic Splendore-Hoeppli reaction. This necrotic area was mainly surrounded by macrophages, multinucleated giant cells and fibroblasts and there were negative, rounded, oval and elongated images, the latter suggestive of hyphae in the center of the Splendore Hoeppli reactions. Histochemistry was carried out using the Grocott-Gomori silver methenamine stain, which showed well-stained fungal hyphae. There are two clinical forms of zygomycosis related to sheep: the rhinofacial form, which is characterized by an increase in the volume of the nasal vestibule, mucocutaneous union of the nose, skin of the anterior region of the face and upper lip, which may present ulcerated lesions; and the nasopharyngeal form, which mainly affects the ethmoid region, paranasal sinuses and pharynx and is characterized by dyspnea, nasal secretion, noisy breathing, craniofacial asymmetry and unilateral exophthalmos. There is also the presence of a nodular mass, with a granular surface, yellow or white in color, with necrosis of the ethmoid region. The lesion extends to the nasal sinuses, the cribiform plate, and may invade the ocular orbit and the frontal region of the brain. The anatomopathological findings of this study in the ethmoid region, the ophthalmic protrusion and the microscopy are similar to those described in the literature, suggesting the diagnosis of zygomycosis, possibly Conidiobolus spp. The diagnosis of zygomycosis was based on the visualization of broad hyphae with scarce septa, non-parallel in outline, with globose dilations at the end, similar to the reproductive mycelium (conidiophores), characteristic structures of the order Mucorales.
