Resumo
The objective of this report is to elucidate the case of a canine patient diagnosed with intranasal Transmissible Venereal Tumor (TVT). TVT is a round cell neoplasm transmitted through direct contact between dogs, often associated with stray, unneutered animals that live near other canines. This disease is distributed across all continents and is considered endemic in underdeveloped regions where there are no public policies for population control of stray animals, a fact that occurs in Brazil and other countries in the Southern Hemisphere. The clinical signs observed generally present with friable and ulcerated lesions in the genital region of males and females, but can also occur with single nodules or in a disseminated manner in the cutaneous form, in addition to also affecting the intranasal region of canine patients in some cases. Diagnosis is usually made through cytopathological examination, combined with the animal's clinical history, but it can also be done through histopathological analysis. Vincristine sulfate is the drug of choice for the treatment of the disease, however, other drugs, such as intravenous doxorubicin and oral lomustine, can also be used in cases of drug resistance. A 3-year-old male, mixed-breed dog treated at a private clinic in the city of Queimados-RJ, presented with an increase in the volume of the nasal plane associated with intense mucopurulent secretion and a history of previous chemotherapy treatment with two sessions of Vincristine Sulfate, which was discontinued after apparent macroscopic remission of the neoplasia. The diagnosis of TVT was made through fine needle aspiration (FNA) for cytopathological examination and then the animal underwent hematological analysis to start chemotherapy treatment. A chemotherapy protocol was instituted with oral lomustine at a dose of 60 mg/m2 every 21 days, totaling 3 doses. The patient underwent the entire chemotherapy protocol without significant blood changes and presented complete remission of the neoplasia after the administration of the 3rd dose of chemotherapy. Lomustine was chosen for treatment due to its lower cost, since it can be handled by the animal's guardian at home with the aid of procedure gloves. The report corroborates the literature described previously, which shows lomustine to be an effective treatment, with lower cost, easy to administer and with minimal blood changes. Therefore, although there is no standardization of the drug dose, lomustine in the dosage used proved to be efficient for complete remission of the tumor.
