Summary
The study explores the concepts of cultural sustainability and smart heritage in the urban context of Belo Horizonte through a case study on the Abílio Barreto Historical Museum (MHAB). Focusing on the application of smart tools in cultural heritage conservation initiatives, the research aims to understand how the MHAB contributes to a contemporary urban scenario that seeks to balance development and preservation. The initial contextualization addresses the growing importance of cultural sustainability in urban management strategies, exploring its role in heritage preservation. In parallel, the emerging concept of "smart heritage" highlights the importance of Information and Communication Technologies (ICTs) for more efficient and enduring cultural heritage management. Through a case study, the work seeks to highlight the smart initiatives implemented and the consequent impacts on the visitor experience at the museum. Additionally, the research aims to identify weaknesses that could be improved with the adoption of other smart tools in future management plans. The methodological approach adopted was qualitative and exploratory in nature to investigate the Abílio Barreto Historical Museum (MHAB) from various perspectives, including cultural sustainability and smart heritage. The research was structured into three main stages: a literature review with excerpts on the themes of sustainable cities, smart cities, cultural sustainability, and smart heritage; the development of a case study based on a historical survey of the institution and its management; and field investigation to identify the smart solutions adopted by MHAB along with a qualitative analysis of visitors' experiences through responses obtained from an online form exploring their perceptions of cultural sustainability and the use of technologies in the museum, as well as the analysis of 80 reviews categorized according to cultural sustainability evaluation criteria. After categorizing and critically analyzing the visitors' comments, the creation of a web app: MHAB Digital is proposed. In the first phase of web app development, the creation of a single platform, accessed directly via a browser, was proposed, where users will have access to content for a broad audience, such as simple language audio, audio description, videos in Brazilian Sign Language (Libras); images and texts translated into foreign languages; cultural agenda of the museum and events hosted in its surroundings; interactive map; and a direct communication platform between the museum and the community. In a second phase, other tools may be added to meet specific demands of that audience, such as an expanded digital collection; audio guide in Portuguese and foreign languages; gamified elements and quizzes; and group visit mode. At the end of the research, the role of MHAB as an important actor in the process of democratizing access to culture and leisure and heritage preservation was reinforced, and the opportunity for the use of more smart tools to strengthen the museum's position as a dynamic and inclusive space capable of contributing to the construction of a culturally sustainable community was identified. It is hoped that this research will contribute to the appreciation of this important historical and cultural instrument of the city of Belo Horizonte.
