Summary
Industrial heritage is part of cultural heritage, presenting some specificities, but demanding the same thoughts and actions necessary for all heritage. In the case of architecture, it is understood that the recognition of assets, knowledge of pre-existence, protection and conservation actions are the same for all cultural architectural heritage, based on international documents. However, a different approach is observed when it comes to the intervention on the industrial architectural heritage, as the terms reuse and adaptive reuse are used much more than conservation. From the 1980s onwards, there was a significant increase in interventions aiming to give new uses to abandoned industrial architectural heritage, without considering the original testimonial values. In many projects, the old building becomes a support for the new proposal, which marks the facades with clashing elements and disregards the spatiality of the large industrial interiors. The principles of distinguishability, reversibility and minimal intervention, pointed out by Cesare Brandi in his famous Restoration Theory, as well as authenticity and respect for the original material and for all the interesting parts of the building, its traditional scheme and the balance of its composition, highlighted in the Venice Charter, are left aside from intervention projects in architectural industrial heritage, being understood as an opportunity to seek new paths. Claudio Varagnoli, professor at the University of Pescara, Italy, observes that like other sectors, such as 20th century architecture, interventions in industrial architectural heritage seem to escape the methodological framework of restoration. It is understood, in this paper, that industrial architectural heritage requires specific studies and even specific solutions for interventions, but which fit within the same theoretical principles of conservation. This paper intends to discuss the intervention project for industrial architectural heritage, understanding to what extent the idea of reuse, understanding it not as just the defense of giving it a new use but as a way of intervening, fits within the interventions foreseen by heritage charters and doctrinal texts.
