Summary
The essay proposes to reconsider the aesthetic manifestation of the link between architecture and its environment, by questioning the importance of light conditions during restauration processes. To do so, we will consider shadows as the physical embodiment of the intersection between natural aesthetics of the environment – conveyed by natural light conditions of a specific geography– and artistic aesthetics – expressed by man-made production. During the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries in Europe, shadows have been considered as not only mere phenomena but as aesthetic attributes that architecture could possess, and which could play a strong role in the expression of architectural characters. Thinking of shadows in this manner implies to both consider and estimate the qualities of light that would cast them, and most of all to purposefully design architectural forms so as to eventually obtain shadows of specific qualities regarding their shape, intensity, colour and edge definition. This interest in shadows emerged with paintings and the theory of chiaroscuro and grew along as architectural drawing techniques became the more precise in their shading. This vantage point on shadows was of a peculiar importance in the work of many theoreticians of the nineteenth century in Europe. Eugène Viollet-le-Duc, John Ruskin, Heinrich Wölfflin and Rudolf Adamy, when trying to understand the intersection between building’s ornamentation and style with its environment, suggested to view shadows as a critical reading and prospective tool. By studying the case of Viollet-le-Duc, the paper aims to humbly question the article 12 of the Venice Charter, which says that “Replacements of missing parts must integrate harmoniously with the whole, but at the same time must be distinguishable from the original so that restoration does not falsify the artistic or historic evidence” thus inviting to a wider reflection on the aesthetic function of shadows in restauration practices today.
