Summary
This paper undertakes an examination of heritage's cultural diversity through a gendered lens, with a particular focus on the female dimension within industrial heritage. Drawing upon pertinent feminist epistemologies and perspectives, it seeks to illuminate the intrinsic value that women contribute to this domain. Through a historical lens, the emergence of female workers is analyzed as emblematic of significant societal transformations in both production methodologies and lifestyle paradigms. Moreover, their ascent is shown to have acted as a catalyst for the advancement of the women's liberation movement, thereby injecting novel momentum into the trajectory of social progress. From a broader societal perspective, the developmental narrative of female workers serves as a mirror reflecting the evolving journey of women within the crucible of industrialization, while concurrently serving as a testament to China's progress towards gender parity. Utilizing Chinese textile mills, silkworm seed farms, and other female-dominated industrial heritage sites as case studies, this paper scrutinizes the role of women within the broader industrialization narrative against the backdrop of China's grassroots industrialization and the women's liberation movement. It endeavors to address questions pertaining to the reshaping of spatial dynamics within industrial societies and the concomitant impact on women. By undertaking a comprehensive analysis encompassing the tripartite spatial dimensions of historical space, social space, and the built environment of heritage, this study endeavors to unearth the nuanced and pluralistic value inherent within industrial heritage. In this endeavor, we draw upon the definitional framework delineated in the Venetian Charter, thereby enriching it to facilitate a more profound comprehension of gender dynamics within industrial heritage.
