Resumo

For an outside observer, the cultural landscape of the Historic Triangle of São Paulo may appear complex, shaped by buildings from different periods and an irregular skyline. In our previous peer-reviewed study published in Cities (https://doi.org/10.1016/j.cities.2024.105529), we addressed this complexity through the concept of generational urban layers, a concept that understands the historic city as a palimpsest continuously rewritten through processes of replacement and overlap, affecting heritage preservation and the identity of historic sites. Here, we introduce the possibility of visualizing the transformation of the historic core of the city layer by layer, from its early stages of formation, within a digital 3D web environment. To this end, the pilot project Arquigrafia 3D is planned for release in May 2026. It is part of the main platform Arquigrafia (www.arquigrafia.org.br), a Brazilian online collaborative platform dedicated to sharing, preserving, and providing access to the iconographic memory of Brazilian architecture and urban spaces. The 3D environment currently under development features a full-screen interactive three-dimensional urban model of the Historic Triangle of São Paulo, rendered with Three.js and occupying the central view, navigable via mouse-based controls (pan, zoom, rotate). A compact top-centered bar allows users to switch between General, Researchers, and Tourists modes, enabling contextual panels for data download or thematic filtering by architectural style and generational layer. A timeline slider filters buildings by decade (from 1530 to 2020), updating visible urban layers in real time. Selecting a building opens a right-side information panel with metadata and media, while a left-side panel supports collaborative contributions. The notion of generational urban layers proves to be an effective method for reading, identifying, and recognizing the cultural landscape of a complex historic site. Using online tools such as Arquigrafia 3D functions as didactic and educational material, not only for the general public but also for urban planners and city officials, by making visible the transformation of these layers from the earliest stages of the site’s formation. As observers understand the historical narratives embedded in each layer, the perceived complexity of the historic site shifts toward an appreciation of its diversity and richness.
