Resumo
The consumption of rice worldwide has been increasing significantly every year and, as a result, breeding programs are faced with the need to launch new, increasingly productive cultivars to satisfy this demand. Estimates, such as genetic progress allow evaluating the performance of breeding programs and, therefore, making the necessary adjustments to increase their efficiency. The objective was to evaluate the genetic progress for the characteristics of yield and flowering days (DFL) of genotypes belonging to the Cultivation and Use Value (VCU) trial of the Upland Rice Improvement Program at UFLA. A total of 48 lines planted in six crops, from 2015/16 to 2020/21, installed in the experimental field were evaluated. The design used was randomized blocks with three replications and plots consisting of 5 rows of 4 meters, spaced at 0.35 m. Both characters were estimated according to methodologies recommended in the literature. Data were analyzed via mixed models with the aid of the R software. The components of variance were estimated via REML and prediction of adjusted means BLUPs, considering the means of the lines introduced in each trial/year in relation to those maintained in the previous year. It was observed in relation to productivity that there was an average decrease of 59.81 kg/ha and, in the case of DFL, a decrease of around 5 days (the reduction of DFL is one of the main objectives of the program). This loss in productivity was probably influenced by adverse climatic factors in recent years and by the selection of earlier lines that indirectly affected the productive potential. However, it can be observed that among the evaluated lines it is possible to obtain genotypes that associate early flowering and grain yield.
