Summary
Ocotea porosa (Nees & Mart.) Barroso, or Imbuia and Ocotea pulchella (Nees) Mez., or Canelinha, are from the Lauraceae family. Both species have phytosociological importance, since they are home for other species and their fruits are a source of food for fauna. The high-quality wood of Imbuia made this species under intense logging in the 20th century and nowadays it is endangered in the Brazilian flora red list. Both species show slow growth and the reproductive stage can take more than fifteen years. Seed physiology in both species have been poorly studied and there is no information about seed desiccation tolerance or storage. In this context, O. porosa and O. pulchella seeds desiccation tolerance were studied here. Seed germination were evaluated at 5 water contents (WC) for O. porosa (0.58, 0.51, 0.40, 0.30, 0.19 gH2O gDW-1) and at 6 WC (0.59, 0.50, 0.39, 0.32, 0.22, 0.12 gH2O gDW-1) for O. pulchella. Seeds were desiccated in silica gel and then placed in filter paper moistened with deionized water and kept during 60 days, at 25°C, 70% moisture and photoperiod of 12 hours. O. porosa fresh seeds (0.58 gH2O gDW-1) germinated only 8%, but 35% in 0.50 gH2O gDW-1 (6hours). Almost no germination was observed below this WC. O. pulchella fresh seeds (0.59 gH2O gDW-1) germinated 85%, and this was reduced to 48% when seeds reached 0.22 gH2O gDW-1. Although the two species have similar fresh seed WC, O. porosa germination was significantly lower than O. puchela. Both species seeds lose viability at high WC and can be classified as desiccation sensitive. This seed category has implications for conservation strategies, both in the context of seedling production and long time germplasms’ storage.
