Main Information

About the School:

The Advanced School on Quantum Modelling of Materials with CRYSTAL - QMMC 2026 provides an in-depth exploration of the theoretical and practical aspects of simulating material properties using quantum mechanics. The event will be held in Volta Redonda, Rio de Janeiro, Brazil at the Federal Fluminense University (UFF - Aterrado campus) from January 26 to 29, 2026. The school is primarily aimed at early-stage researchers (postdoctoral researchers, PhD candidates, MSc/undergraduate students), with a limited number of attendees.

Important dates:

Registration: November 21, 2025 to January 10, 2026. (Registration Closed - waiting list)
Abstract submission: November 21, 2025 to December 19, 2025.
Notification of abstract acceptance: December 29, 2025.
Event:
January 26 to 29, 2026.

Lectures and Hands on:

Participants will receive focused instruction on the basic principles and diverse applications of Density Functional Theory (DFT), a powerful quantum mechanical based method widely used in condensed matter physics and computational chemistry. Theoretical background lectures and hands-on tutorials with the CRYSTAL Code team (https://www.crystal.unito.it/) covering the setup, execution, and analysis of simulations for crystalline materials will enable participants to apply DFT techniques to real-world materials problems.

Abstracts and Poster Session:

The attendees are encouraged to present a scientific poster to share their work, promote collaboration, and contribute to the discussion of advances in physics.

Abstract Guidelines:

  • The abstract must follow the provided template, with a maximum of one A4 page;
  • It must be a concise summary of your research topic and findings;
  • Written in English, as a single paragraph (no distinct sections, without section headings);
  • Full citations are listed immediately following the last sentence of the abstract text and separated by semicolons (;);
  • No figures or tables;
  • Must be submitted as a PDF file named as “QMMC2026-AUTHOR-AFFILIATION.pdf”, with “AUTHOR” the first author's surname and “AFFILIATION” the first author's affiliation.
  • Send the PDF file by email to abstract.qmmc2026@gmail.com with subject “ABSTRACT-QMMC2026”
    Abstracts out of the above rules, will not be considered for evaluation.

Notification of abstract acceptance will be sent by email in December 29, 2025. The poster guidelines will follow with the acceptance email.

Notes:

  • The school is primarily aimed at early-stage researchers (postdoctoral researchers, PhD candidates, M.Sc./undergraduate students). Due to the limited number of attendees and sponsoring, preference will be given to participants who will present a poster. Upon slot availability, we may also accept participants who do not intend to present work (but they will be placed in a waiting list).
  • A limited number of hotel rooms may be sponsored by the event, but it is highly recommended that participants secure their own funds for accommodation, if possible.

Venue + Host City:

Known as "Cidade do Aço," Volta Redonda is a pivotal industrial hub in the Rio de Janeiro state. Nestled in the Paraíba Valley, it is renowned for hosting the Companhia Siderúrgica Nacional (CSN), symbolizing Brazil's industrial strength. The city combines its rich industrial heritage with modern urban planning and green spaces. The QMMC 2026 school will be held at the Aterrado Campus of UFF (Address: Desembargador Ellis Hermydio Figueira, 783 - Aterrado, Volta Redonda - RJ).

Schedule

Plenary Talk: Prof. Roberto Bechara - Universidade Federal Fluminense

Seminar 1-2: Dr. Filipe Dalmatti - Instituto Federal de São Paulo

Lecture 8: Prof. Ravindra Pandey - Michigan Technological University

Lectures and Hands-on by CRYSTAL code team (University of Torino)
