From September 14 to 18, 2026, the Institute of Marine Sciences (LABOMAR) at the Federal University of Ceará (UFC) will host the 9th Fortaleza-Austral Spring School & INSPIRE – International Spring School in Marine Science, under the theme “Coastal Vulnerability and Management.”
Bringing together researchers, students, academics, and professionals from Brazil, Costa Rica, Portugal, Spain, Colombia, Angola, and beyond, the program will offer a dynamic combination of keynote lectures, roundtable discussions, hands-on short courses, case studies, and student-led project workshops.
Throughout the week, participants will explore key topics in contemporary coastal and marine science, including coastal vulnerability, nature-based solutions, mangrove ecosystem valuation, coastal governance, citizen science, ocean literacy, and climate change adaptation.
More than a scientific training event, the Spring School provides an international forum for knowledge exchange, interdisciplinary learning, capacity building, and cross-national collaboration. By connecting different disciplines, institutions, and perspectives, the program seeks to strengthen scientific understanding and practical approaches to the growing environmental and societal challenges facing coastal areas.
The event is jointly organized by the Graduate Program in Tropical Marine Sciences (PPGCMT/LABOMAR/UFC) and the Graduate Program in Geography (PPGGeo/UFC), with the support of the Atlantic International Research Centre (AIR Centre), strengthening interdisciplinary and international cooperation in addressing contemporary coastal challenges.
We invite all participants to engage actively, exchange experiences, build new collaborations, and contribute to more resilient and sustainable coastal futures.

Attention! Students enrolled in the postgraduate course VEP9001 – TÓPICOS ESPECIAIS VI – T01 will receive 3 academic credits, provided that they attend the scheduled classes and participate in the Spring School activities, exercises, and courses.
