ICLHE Conference 2025
EMInclusion: Integrating Language and Content for Egalitarian Higher Education
In an increasingly interconnected world, English-medium instruction (EMI) and Other Languages as a Medium of Instruction (OLMI) have emerged as key strategies for facilitating international communication and collaboration. However, their implementation often raises questions about linguistic diversity and inclusiveness, presenting both challenges and opportunities for educators, policymakers, and society at large.
The 8th ICLHE Conference will focus on the complexities of EMI/OLMI, welcoming contributions incorporating other languages to enrich discussions regarding ensuring equitable participation in HE. By bringing educators, researchers, policymakers, and stakeholders together, we seek to promote meaningful conversations and collaborations that go beyond linguistic/content boundaries. Through keynote speeches, panel discussions, and interactive workshops, we hope to take stock of current approaches and innovations in EMI/OLMI while also sharing practices that support greater inclusivity in HE.
The vision for the 2025 Conference is to contribute to the development of a more inclusive and dynamic HE system. We aim to explore how EMI/OLMI can be utilized as a tool to foster linguistic inclusion rather than exclusion. By presenting case studies, research findings, and policy considerations, we hope to deepen our understanding of how language shapes educational experiences.
Ultimately, our goal is to advance the dialogue on linguistic integration in HE, where language is not a barrier but a bridge to equal opportunities. We encourage participants to actively engage, share their research, and collaborate on strategies that position language as a unifying force, enhancing the educational experience for all.

Practical Information
Conference Venue
The ICLHE Conference 2025 will take place at the Federal University of Health Sciences of Porto Alegre (UFCSPA), located at Rua Sarmento Leite, 245, Centro Histórico, Porto Alegre, Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil.
Traveling to Porto Alegre
Porto Alegre, the capital of Rio Grande do Sul, the southernmost state of Brazil, is easily accessible by both air and road.
By Air:
For international travelers, we recommend flying into Brazil via Brasília, Rio de Janeiro, or São Paulo, with connecting flights to Porto Alegre (Salgado Filho Airport).
If you’re traveling from Europe, particularly via Portugal, you may find direct flights to Porto Alegre, though these are not available every day of the week.
By Road:
For travelers coming from other Brazilian states, Porto Alegre is accessible via the BR-101 (Rodovia Transbrasileira) and other major highways.
Local Transportation
For transfers from Salgado Filho Airport or the Central Bus Station to UFCSPA or nearby hotels, you can use taxis or Uber.
Estimated taxi fare from the airport to UFCSPA: around R$40.00.
For foreign visitors: We recommend paying in cash (Brazilian Reais – BRL).
For Brazilian participants: Payment by credit card or Pix is often accepted.
Taxis are readily available outside the airport, and Uber services are also easily accessible.
Suggested Accommodation
Porto Alegre offers a variety of good hotels and excellent restaurants.
The following hotels are located near the city center and offer easy access to UFCSPA, either on foot or via a short taxi or Uber ride:
Widely accepted in most places: restaurants, shops, hotels, and even taxis. Visa and Mastercard are the most commonly accepted.
Cash (Brazilian Reais – BRL):
Recommended for small expenses (tips, small purchases, street markets, and small cafés).
Always carry a small amount in case cards or apps are not accepted.
Pix (Instant Payment System):
Extremely popular in Brazil, but usually not available for foreign tourists without Brazilian bank accounts.
Taxis vs. Uber:
Uber:
Preferred for safety, price transparency, and ease of payment via the app.
Taxis:
Many official airport and city taxis accept credit cards, but it's advisable to confirm before starting the ride. Cash remains commonly used for street-hailed taxis.
Restaurants and Shops:
Credit/debit cards are accepted in most restaurants, cafés, and stores, especially in shopping malls or commercial areas. Smaller neighborhood establishments may require cash.
Currency Exchange:
It’s advisable to exchange money at official exchange offices (casas de câmbio) or withdraw Brazilian Reais from ATMs at the airport or downtown, provided your international card allows it.
Tipping:
A 10% service charge is usually included in restaurant bills (optional but customary to pay). Tipping taxi or Uber drivers is not required, though rounding up is appreciated.
Electrical Outlets and Voltage:
Electrical outlets in Porto Alegre are typically of the Type NBR 14136 standard, with two parallel pins and a ground pin (three prongs). The voltage is usually 127V or 110V.

Cultural Insights & Safety Considerations
In Brazil, a warm and friendly demeanor is central to professional and social interactions. Greetings often include a handshake or, in informal settings, a light kiss on the cheek or a hug, especially among acquaintances. Titles such as "Professor" or "Doctor" are commonly used in academic settings, reflecting respect for academic and professional status.
Attire for professional events tends to be business casual or formal, depending on the occasion. Dressing appropriately for the warm climate is advised, but modesty is valued in professional contexts.
Meals are important social occasions, and participants may be invited to dine with colleagues. Brazilian cuisine is diverse and flavorful, with lunch typically being the main meal of the day. Sharing food and casual conversation during meals is common.
Punctuality can be flexible in informal settings but is expected in professional engagements. Participants are encouraged to embrace Brazil’s vibrant culture, which values relationships and personal connections.
Although Porto Alegre offers a vibrant academic environment, typical urban safety precautions should be observed. Visitors are advised to take standard measures, such as avoiding the display of valuable items in public, using registered transportation services, and remaining in well-lit, populated areas—especially at night. It is also recommended to follow local guidance and store valuables in hotel safes. Emergency contact information and a safety briefing will be provided to ensure that all conference attendees feel informed and well-prepared.
