The 5th International Conference of Medical Unions took place on January 25–26, 2024, in Alicante, Spain, organized by the Confederación Estatal de Sindicatos Médicos de la Comunidad Valenciana (CESM-CV).
The event gathered approximately 200 union leaders from 12 countries and was officially opened by the Regional Minister of Health of the Valencian Community and representatives of the local Medical Association, who emphasized the importance of preserving the doctor-patient relationship and upholding the dignity of the medical profession.
The conference program was structured around six thematic panels and a roundtable discussion, covering a wide range of issues, including:
Violence and occupational health, with strong advocacy for a zero-tolerance policy regarding assaults on physicians;
Comparative analyses of public and private healthcare systems across Latin America and Europe;
Working conditions, including shifts, on-call duties, and remuneration;
Union strategies and successful advocacy models adopted in different countries;
Migration of medical professionals, highlighting the brain drain from lower-income to higher-income countries;
The future of the medical profession, with attention to artificial intelligence and the importance of continuous professional development.
The Brazilian delegation, coordinated by the Brazilian Medical Federation (FMB), was composed of twelve representatives from eight state-level medical unions (Pará, Tocantins, Amazonas, Mato Grosso, Alagoas, Pernambuco, Grande ABC, and Paraná). Waldir Cardoso, from the Pará Medical Union, presented a panel on health systems, while Janice Painkow (Tocantins) addressed the topic of physician migration. The Brazilian participation underscored a strategic aim: to host the next edition of the conference in Brazil.
The discussions reaffirmed that improving working conditions is an essential prerequisite for ensuring the quality of healthcare services. Moreover, the modernization of union communication tools was highlighted as vital to strengthen mobilization efforts and gain broader public support.
It was officially announced in Alicante that the 6th International Conference of Medical Trade Unions will take place in Brazil in 2025. The State of Paraíba, through its capital city João Pessoa, now bears the responsibility of continuing the dialogue initiated in Alicante. The Brazilian commitment involves fostering international exchange of union projects and knowledge, with the goal of ensuring that the practice of medicine continues to be guided by ethics, responsibility, and humanistic principles—always in defense of the environment and the population.
