PRESENTATION

The consolidation of digital technologies and the expansion of communication networks have profoundly reshaped how societies produce, circulate, and interpret narratives about the past. This transformation, intensified by the speed and breadth of digital media, crosses both the spaces of education and the environments of social interaction, impacting the very notion of historical culture. It is in this scenario that Public History asserts itself as a vibrant, plural and constantly renewing field, aimed at understanding and critically intervening in the ways in which the past is mobilized in the public sphere.

Since Robert Kelley's inaugural propositions (1975), Public History has gone beyond the restricted idea of scientific dissemination and proposes a collaborative, dialogical and socially committed practice. It is up to the historian not only to produce specialized knowledge, but to establish dialogues with different audiences, recognize multiple forms of historical agency, and occupy the spaces — institutional, media, and community — where the past is continuously experienced, disputed, and reconfigured. It is, therefore, a field that articulates hybrid and interdisciplinary methodologies, capable of tensioning hegemonic discourses, problematizing silencing, and promoting critical debates on memory, heritage, identities, and public uses of History.

In this sense, the Justification of the present event is rooted in contemporary urgencies. The accelerated circulation of historical narratives in the most diverse media (from journalism to digital platforms, from cinema to community productions) highlights the need to train critical subjects, capable of identifying manipulation strategies, ideological frameworks, and power projects that permeate the public construction of the past. In a context marked by denialism, simplifying revisionism, and the massive dissemination of disinformation, it is essential to foster practices that articulate historical education, social participation, and conscious appropriations of digital technologies and humanities.

Thus, this event is justified by its proposal to integrate theoretical reflection, pedagogical practice and creative experimentation. It seeks to offer a space for debate and collective construction that values the production of historical content mediated by various languages and media, stimulating the protagonism of participants and strengthening the ethical-political commitment of History in the face of contemporary disputes of meaning. By promoting dialogue between researchers, educators, students, and communities, the meeting reaffirms Public History as a strategic field to broaden social debate, combat distorted narratives, and consolidate a more democratic, critical, and plural relationship with the past.
