The first edition of the Conference, held in Lisbon in 2024, concentrated on female slavery in Africa and the Americas. This time, our goal is to broaden the scope, encouraging researchers to share studies on enslaved women across different periods of time and locations. This includes diverse ethnicities, social groups, religions, and communities affected not only by the violence of enslavement, but also by the resistance and transgressions that shaped their lives.
The main topics discussed at this conference include, among others: sources for the study of slavery; theoretical and methodological perspectives; forms of enslavement; social, economic, and political experiences; life trajectories; forms of labor exploitation; marriage, family, childhood, motherhood, concubinage, and other sexual and/or affective arrangements; body and sexuality; slavery, rights, and justice; slavery and material culture; intercontinental and regional trafficking; strategies of individual or collective resistance; abolitionisms; post-abolition societies; marginalization and citizenship; memories of slavery. The Conference also covers other forms of dependency and exploitation that impacted the lives of women and girls across different historical periods.
